Purpose
Why is mind purification or cleansing necessary? The average person, almost without exception, harbors some form or two of negative emotion such as anger, hatred, fear, jealousy, etc. One wants to get rid of these emotions, but finds that he cannot do so. Often times, too, the person knows that he or she must forgive and become reconciled with so-called enemies, but there is a side of the person that simply refuses to forgive. So one continues to nurse his or her grudge, hate, anger, etc. These emotions can cause great harm to one's health, business, family, harmony, etc. even when it is something that has been long forgotten. The average person may forget a negative though-for example, hatred-by pushing it out of the conscious mind or by burying it. But this does not mean that the emotion of hatred has been destroyed. Like sweeping dirt and dust under a rug, it has simply been hidden from view, but it is still there doing grate harm from the deep recesses of the subconscious mind. When the conditions prevail, mind purification or cleansing becomes necessary. The Seicho-No-Ie mind Purification Ceremony cleanses the mind completely. The first thing one does in this ceremony is to write on paper all thoughts and emotions exactly in the way the emotions are felt. It is important to be honest with one's feelings-to be frank. In other words, one must faithfully record even the ugliest thoughts and feelings exactly as they are felt without disguising the feelings in any way.
